Let’s Review Some Common Sense
Slowly but surely it is beginning to heat up here in San Diego. We need to take special precautions for our furry family members. DO NOT leave your pets in your car! Not even with the windows cracked. Cars heat up rapidly and exponentially so that your pet could die in the time it takes you to pick up a few groceries. The temperature in a car on an 80-degree day could easily escalate to 120 degrees in less than 20 minutes. At that temperature, animals can suffer brain damage and die. As if that weren’t enough, it is also ILLEGAL. California Senate Bill 1806 makes it illegal for pet owners to leave their animals in an enclosed vehicle under dangerous conditions. It also allows law enforcement or animal control officers to break into a vehicle if they cannot locate an animal’s owner after making a reasonable effort to do so.
While we’re at it let’s not forget to alway provide them with fresh water (California Penal Code Sec. 597E). And for those that are left outdoors, they need shade! A cool spot to get out of the sun during the heat of the day. Again, this is enforceable by Calif. Penal Code Sec.597A which states that “A dog must be provided access to shelter from extremes of heat or cold and rain at all times.”
