Keeping You Informed – the Scoop on Online Pet Pharmacies
The Internet is rapidly changing the way we live, work and shop. Many of our clients have asked about purchasing medications online. The information below was developed to answer some of the most frequently asked questions and address concerns, to inform you regarding what the law requires and to provide you with more information about our in-house pharmaceutical services.
While many online pharmacies are trustworthy, others have questionable ethics and dubious business practices. Some have little to no quality control while others use outdated or substandard products. Because of this, San Diego Pet Hospital has partnered with the industry’s best, Vetsource. You can view our online pharmacy here.
The following U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) video shares consumer safety tips on purchasing prescription medications for your pets online. The FDA also published a Consumer Safety Guide (PDF) that can be viewed by clicking here.

Purchasing from an Outside Pharmacy
If you elect to have your prescription filled through an outside pharmacy, we are happy to provide a written prescription for you. However, please note that in order to process a prescription the law requires that one of our veterinarians must have seen your pet within the past 12 months. In addition, some medications require periodic blood tests in order to refill a prescription, so in some cases this time frame may be shorter. If you request a written prescription, please allow 24 hours for it to be processed.
