What to Expect the Day Before, During & After Surgery

Drop-off time for surgical and anesthetic procedures is between 8 am and 9 am. Please plan on spending 10–15 minutes with a surgery technician to go over the estimate, review the surgical plan and options, and to sign required consent forms.
Once in surgery, every patient is assigned a surgical assistant who will stay with your pet from the beginning of the procedure until your pet is fully awake. Once your pet is in the recovery ward, we will call you to schedule a pick-up time. Please allow at least 15 minutes when you arrive to go over important discharge information, aftercare instructions, medications to go home, and to answer any questions that you may have.
Our Anesthesia Protocol
Most surgical procedures will require that your pet be placed under general anesthesia, and we understand that some owners have questions or concerns about this. At San Diego Pet Hospital, we take anesthesia safety very seriously. Our top priority is to maintain your pet’s health and comfort throughout the entire anesthetic procedure and to have a successful, uneventful recovery. Therefore we have designed an anesthetic protocol that is among the very safest in the profession. Click here to read about our protocol.
